Romney joins ‘birther’ movement

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney today pandered to the so-called ‘birther’ movement at a campaign rally in Michigan.

“I love being home, in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born,” Romney said as his wife, Ann, and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) stood next to him on the podium.

“Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital, I was born in Harper Hospital. No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate; they know that this is the place that we were born and raised,” he said. The crowd laughed and applauded loudly.

Romney actually did release his birth certificate in May.

Pray tell, why would Romney release his birth certificate, which nobody had asked for, and make statements about his birth certificate today?

Simple. While Romney makes plenty of public statements about Obama being born in this country, he still wants the birther vote. If he gives them an occasional wink and a nod, not only will they believe he’s on their side, but he also keeps independent voters doubtful of Obama’s citizenship.

It does provide a great distraction from Romney’s refusal to release other documents which Obama has made public:

His tax returns.
